Pearl Rosaries Reflections

Rosary prayer beads come in many materials:  wood, plastic, glass, garnet, stones, and crystal among many others.  Of all the beads it is the beloved and serene pearl that makes a particularly lovely choice for a new rosary, either for personal use or for a special gift. These round white shimmering beads have a long cultural history that enhances there use as rosary prayer beads and a rosary necklaces.

To some, in western culture the round shape and the shimmering color of the pearl evokes the image of the moon and suggests peacefulness.  To others they see a symbol of wealth and riches. Even today pearls can be found in high-end jewelry. And to others pearls stand as a representative of fertility and marriage and is the origin for their popularity with brides on their wedding day.

But most importantly pearls represent beauty and sacred value. Regardless of the cultural context appreciation of pearl has been a symbol of beauty, grace and value since man started harvesting pearls some 6000 years ago. The unique shimmer and soft white color has always been appreciated and loved.  Even in Matthew 7:6 it says “Do not give dogs what is holy; and do not throw your pearls in front of pigs..."
